Be careful with online payments, two-factor authentication, and still robbed.
Actually, I had always considered my knowledge of banking to be relatively solid.
Today, on February 2, 2026, I learned otherwise.
Over $900 in crypto siphoned off at Coinbase.
Google login at Manching near Ingolstadt
At around 4 p.m., I received a warning from Google that someone had logged in near Manching, close to Ingolstadt. Shortly afterwards, I received the first PayPal confirmations that cryptocurrency had been purchased on my Coinbase account. By the time I was able to change my passwords, over €900 had already been debited from my account and a considerable amount had been sent to Bitcoin and USDC addresses. All in less than an hour.
The full extent of the damage will probably only become apparent in the next few days.
I contacted Coinbase via chat and had the account blocked.
I called PayPal and discussed the unauthorized payments. Sparkasse Regensburg has been informed by email.
Please check your accounts and be vigilant for unusual logins to Google, your email account, PayPal, and Coinbase.
Please check the security of your passwords for your Google, PayPal, and Coinbase accounts, as well as your email and web hosting accounts! If a login comes from an unusual location .

Update February 4, 2026: Cryptocurrency theft at computer service center
Computers and smartphones checked for viruses or malware.
Nothing conspicuously relevant found.
The fact that RustDesk is found as a heuristic hit is nothing new, as virus scanner manufacturers see it as a potential gateway for hackers. But it is just remote maintenance software. To put it bluntly: a kitchen knife can also be used to commit murder.

A fragment of a Trojan horse was discovered. The remainder is RustDesk.
The Trojan horse was discovered on a Linux partition “/home/”.
According to Microsoft, GDATA, and Kaspersky, VHOTrojan.Win32.comhijacking.mb can be used to read user input such as keystrokes.
However, this one file was found on a Linux partition. “/home/var/app/”[…] .
This means that it is not active on Windows. And all relevant banking activities have so far been carried out on Windows.
Used here: Kaspersky Rescue Disk. The system boots Linux from DVD.
Viruses that could infect the system before it boots are thus unable to bypass the virus scanner.

Also on the smartphone. Only RustDesk found as a heuristic hit.
No virus infection visible.
In use here: AVG
