“Starting in June 2026, the current Microsoft Secure Boot certificates will expire. Virtually every PC today has a UEFI BIOS with Secure Boot enabled and Windows 11 or Linux installed. Secure Boot works like the key-lock principle. Certificates from Microsoft are stored in the UEFI BIOS. These are currently the certificates “Microsoft Corporation UEFI CA 2011”, “Microsoft Corporation KEK CA 2011” and “Windows Production PCA 2011”, which will expire in June 2026 and October 2026 and lose their validity. If, after that, the Windows bootloader in the bootmgfw.efi file is updated by Windows 11 updates and encounters the old certificates in the UEFI BIOS, the PC will no longer start up, and vice versa.
