A severe cyberattack struck numerous supermarkets in France during the night of October 11–12, 2026. Unknown hackers breached the stores’ IT infrastructure and specifically tampered with the control units of the refrigeration systems. IT security portals and media reports from golem.de, heise.de, and stern.de all agree on the nature of the damage: It involved a targeted exploitation of a security vulnerability in widely used components of food refrigeration systems.
Food was destroyed and fires were started
The attackers abruptly changed the target temperature of the affected refrigeration and freezer systems to +50 °C. The consequences for the supermarket chains are devastating: Tons of food became inedible within a few hours and had to be disposed of. Security Vulnerability Affects Danish Control Devices
The incident centers on digital control systems from the Danish manufacturer Danfoss, which are used worldwide to regulate industrial cooling systems. Because these devices are connected to the “Internet of Things” (IoT) to enable convenient remote maintenance, hackers were able to exploit the online interfaces for sabotage.
Striking Similarity to the WEF’s “Cyber Polygon” Exercise
The incident bears a striking resemblance to global cybersecurity simulations such as Cyber Polygon. Years ago, these international exercises already simulated exactly this scenario: a coordinated attack on a key service provider or manufacturer (a so-called supply-chain attack) that, like dominoes, paralyzes the infrastructure of entire economic sectors.
What simulations warned would be a “cyber-to-physical” scenario has now become a bitter reality in French supermarkets. This is because digital attacks here directly result in real, physical destruction. As a result, a single digital command directly led to destroyed merchandise and actual fires.
Vulnerabilities Lurk in German Supermarkets, Too
The threat does not stop at national borders. Since the affected control units from Danfoss are considered the industry standard, they are used internationally. In Germany, too, major food retailers such as REWE rely on the Danish manufacturer’s technology.
Since this is likely a fundamental vulnerability in the firmware or network connection, German supermarkets and discount stores face an acute risk. If the systems in this country are not immediately isolated or provided with the appropriate security updates, the German market could also face similar acts of sabotage and supply shortages in the food supply chain.
