JSON Error Gutenberg Editor
When the Server Firewall Strikes: How Tightened Security Rules Cause Sudden JSON Errors in the Gutenberg Editor. Computerservicearminfischercom . https://computerservice.arminfischer.com/news/8195/ .

What stays after PHP2Shell
Anyone trying to update their WordPress website over the past few days—especially when editing the header or footer areas in modern Block Themes (Full Site Editing / FSE)—might have run into a frustrating barrier. Upon clicking the “Save” button, WordPress suddenly refuses to apply the changes. Consequently, it throws a generic error: “The response is not a valid JSON response” or displays persistent connection loss warnings.
What looks like a broken theme or a programming glitch at first glance turns out to be a massive conflict. However, upon closer inspection, it is triggered by recent global PHP security deployments (the PHP2Shell mitigation) and the internal routing architecture of WordPress core.
Therefore, this critical issue does not just target a single product. Highly popular block themes like Neve FSE, as well as WordPress default themes including Twenty Twenty-Four and Twenty Twenty-Five, have suddenly triggered these security blocks on various hosting platforms.
The Cause: A “Silent Bug” Meets Digital Door Security
To patch critical PHP2Shell vulnerabilities in October 2026, web hosts and server administrators worldwide implemented immediate, strict protective rules within their Web Application Firewalls (WAF) and ModSecurity modules. These systems continuously scan all incoming web traffic to block malicious activities.
Here, strict server security directly collides with native WordPress architecture. When utilizing Full Site Editing, WordPress intentionally uses a specific double slash notation within the REST API path to identify theme template parts:
…/wp-json/wp/v2/template-parts/neve-fse//header
or correspondingly
…/wp-json/wp/v2/template-parts/twentytwentyfive//header
This double slash (//) is completely intentional and fully documented by WordPress core. Nevertheless, following the latest emergency security patches, hyper-sensitive server firewalls flag these double slashes as potential directory traversal attacks. As a result, the server instantly drops the connection. Thus, it returns an HTTP 503 (Service Unavailable) or 403 (Forbidden) HTML page, which forces the Gutenberg editor to fail with an invalid JSON response.
What We Tried: The Troubleshooting Dead Ends
While diagnosing affected production systems, we deployed several troubleshooting methods. Unfortunately, these methods proved entirely ineffective against these severe firewall implementations:
- The PHP Hook Approach (Failed): Implementing a PHP snippet via plugins like WPCode to clean up the REST route using rest_pre_dispatch had zero effect. After all, the server-side firewall drops the request before WordPress is even initialized.
- The Browser JavaScript Fix (Failed): Attempting to filter and clean the request path directly inside the browser (Opera/Chrome) before transmission failed under aggressive environments as well. Furthermore, the WAFs did not just inspect the URL string, but they also blocked the entire POST payload as soon as native FSE layout structures were detected.
- Internal Server Rewrites via .htaccess (Failed): Rewriting the incoming URL internally using Apache’s mod_rewrite rules was bypassed entirely. This happens because the hoster’s WAF layer sits directly in front of the .htaccess execution stack.
The Solution for Agencies, Web Designers, and Site Owners
The good news is that the situation is normalizing across many environments. This is because hosting providers are finally fine-tuning their setups to reduce false positives and accommodate native WordPress behavior.
Moving forward, one principle remains crucial: Even under highly hardened firewall environments, web designers and agency administrators must retain the ability to perform core theme customisations within the backend. The daily workflows of developers and site owners should not be paralyzed by over-aggressive server security rules.
Immediate Action Steps if You Encounter This Issue:
- The Host Support: Open a ticket with your hosting provider. Provide them with the blocked REST API path (which you can find by pressing F12 › Network tab when trying to save) and ask them to whitelist the triggered ModSecurity rule ID or adjust the WAF settings for your WordPress REST API endpoints.
- The Custom Template Part Workaround: In your WordPress dashboard, navigate to Appearance › Editor › Template Parts and create a brand-new template part with a unique slug (e.g., custom-site-header). By doing this, you avoid using standard strings like neve-fse or twentytwenty in the URL path. Paste your header structure there, and replace the old block inside your templates with this firewall-proof alternative.
We are dedicated to tracking these critical infrastructure shifts to keep your digital workflows safe, stable, and highly functional!
